AS HEARD ON TV: “Hurricane,” MS MR on Pretty Little Liars
In honor of the shocking (haha, jokes) finale recently, this week’s column is devoted to Pretty Little Liars. Judge me if you want - I judge me - but no one can argue that this show doesn’t have surprisingly quality music and a persisting ability to leave you curious about what will happen next, regardless of how absurd the premise of the plot is. It’s all about a town full of liars and people dying or nearly dying in every episode. Think Game of Thrones…kidding, it’s nothing like Game of Thrones.
MS MR’s “Hurricane” plays as the girls are searching for a malicious but dead detective’s casket at his funeral - typical scenario. This song put MS MR on the map and cheers to that because the duo is rad and deserving of praise. The Vassar alums have made their way into the forefront by releasing catchy singles, touring with GROUPLOVE, and remixing the moment’s synth-heavy artists (Sylvan Esso, Charli XCX, etc). Fun fact: vocalist Lizzy Plapinger co-founded the reputable indie label, Neon Gold Records. Other fun fact: while Pretty Little Liars does not resemble Game of Thrones in the least, “Bones” by MS MR was actually featured in the GOT third season trailer.
To choose a band as your opening act and commit to spending months on the road together must mean that you really like ‘em right? Well, then it must be true love for GROUPLOVE and MS MR, since this spring, they will tour together for the second time!
For anyone who was lucky enough to catch the talented pop duo open last December, they already know how awesome MS MR is live. And for the unlucky among us who couldn’t get into that show, here’s the rundown: lead singer Lizzy Plapinger (who also co-founded the label Neon Gold) and keyboardist and producer Max Hershenow have been creating infectious alt-pop tunes together since 2010 and the past three years have been full of success.
Their single “Hurricane” reached #8 on the US Alternative Charts and their debut album Secondhand Rapture dropped in 2013 to critical success. The album seamlessly blends Plapinger’s gravelly voice with rumbling background beats to create their own unique brand of dark pop. This duo’s fan base has exploded in 2013 and I definitely don’t see it slowing down in the new year. So do yourself a favor and snag tickets to GROUPLOVE’s 3rd (!) night before it sells out and come early to see this alt-pop powerhouse in action.
It seems just fifteen minutes ago I was talking about Ms Mr’s Tumblr roll and now they’re on Columbia Records. You know who else just got signed to Columbia Records? Daft Punk. Did you see Ms Mr when they preformed at the Gibson Guitar Showroom last summer? They stole the show from Alex Winston. Did you see them open for Marina and the Diamonds? How about Grouplove? All three of those 9:30 Club shows were Sold Out. It’s no surprise that their song “Bones” turned up in a preview for the season three of Game of Thrones.
The video for “Fantasy”, the first single off their major label debut, Secondhand Rapture, has all the high production flare that comes with being on a major record label. Their tumbles are now concise dark pop anthems with a specific vision. If there is glitter spewing out of the mouths of cheerleaders in their new video, what’s going to happen on this festival stage?
Anyone who snagged tickets to GROUPLOVE is certainly prepared to dance. Extend the party and check out the killer experimental pop duo, MS MR. Get ready for haunting vocals, synth beats, and lyrics that are melancholy in sentiment but upbeat in delivery. Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow released their debut EP, Candy Bar Creep Show (which is so appropriate for Halloween) this past July. The rushing of images in the video for their first breakout song “Hurricane” will make you a bit dizzy and captivated all at once. MS MR is the perfect prelude to GROUPLOVE.
VOTD: Ms Mr – ‘Hurricane’ because most of the music that we like is rooted in our own personal nostalgias. Basically, we like what we like because of the experiences we’ve had with music. The best part about this up and coming band is that they’re so firmly aware of their particular nostalgic background. In this video for their single ‘Hurricane’ we get a shotgun blast of the inner workings of the mind of Ms Mr. Consider it a tumblr dump summing up where all the gorgeously dark-laced pop comes from that Ms Mr revel in so hard. Ms Mr will be creating some new awesome musical experiences when they open for GROUPLOVE 10/29 and 10/30.
